In October 2022, Dr. Fred Ayokhai, an Associate Professor of History, and his three children endured a wrongful six-month detention in a Nigerian prison while awaiting trial for assault.
This traumatic experience exposed the harsh realities of poverty-driven incarceration and the plight of marginalized communities.
Driven by resilience, Fred a seasoned academic with 20+ years in Nigerian universities founded this NGO in March 2025 to address three interconnected crises: systemic poverty, unjust pretrial detention, and gender inequality.
Today, our work is rooted in lived experience, academic rigor, and a relentless commitment to justice.
The Fred Ayokhai Foundation is a CAC-certified NGO dedicated to breaking cycles of poverty, injustice, and gender inequality in Nigeria. Through sustainable programs in poverty alleviation, **prisons outreach, and women/girl-child empowerment, we restore dignity, advocate for systemic change, and build resilient communities.
A Nigeria where no one is impoverished by circumstance, incarcerated without cause, or denied opportunity due to gender.
